Mold in a cigar humidor: how to remove it step by step

If mold appears in a cigar humidor, it is important to act properly. It is not just about cleaning, but about eliminating the problem at its source: excess humidity and lack of ventilation.

1. Identify the problem and remove the cigars

Mould typically appears as whitish, greenish or greyish spots, both on the wood and on the cigars. If in doubt, it is always safer to treat it as mould.

Remove all cigars from the humidor, especially those affected, and keep them separated to prevent contamination.

Cigars can be cleaned using a very slightly damp cloth, carefully removing any surface mould. It is important not to wet them. Once cleaned, they should be stored temporarily in a controlled environment, such as an airtight container with a Bóveda-type system, until the humidor has been fully restored.

At this stage, it is also advisable to check the humidification system to detect any excess or imbalance.

2. Drying and cleaning the humidor

Before using the humidor again, it is essential to ensure that the conditions will be correct:

• Check the humidification system and avoid excess moisture.
• Do not oversaturate sponges or over-adjust electronic systems.
• Ensure proper ventilation and air renewal.

Once stabilised, the cigars can be reintroduced progressively. It is advisable to take this opportunity to redistribute them and improve air circulation inside the humidor.

During the following days, humidity and temperature should be monitored closely to confirm that the balance has been restored.
